When You Weren't Looking

Many times in relationships we see and feel things that we choose to ignore until......we just can't ignore them anymore. We go from emotion to emotion until there's nothing left.

You thought I didn't see you

but I did

I watched you with jealous eyes

as you took her hand and helped

her out of the car.

Your gentle kiss on her cheek

brought a smile to her face.

That kiss once belonged to me,

and I wondered what she did so differently.

I wondered why you chose her.

I know you thought I didn't see you

but I did.

I felt the anger build up as you walked out

of the flower shop

carrying a fresh bouquet of white lilies.

Those were my favorite.

You once told me that they symbolized

the purity of our love.

What a fool I was.

You thought I didn't see you

but I did.

The sadness overwhelmed me

as you quietly gathered your things

into that old green duffle bag.

I wanted to jump up and beg you to stay

but I couldn't move.

So I just laid there as still as the night

watching my life walk out of the door

without a single good-bye. © Joyce Oscar 2007

Joyce Oscar is originally from Memphis , Tennessee she now resides in Atlanta Georgia. She loves all forms of music from Country to Jazz. Her repertoire includes poetry, fiction, essays and songs. Her outlook on life translates into her writing. She states, " I believe that poetry is the measured language of emotion. It bears witness to our lives and what we have experienced. It is a celebration of language in its most illustrious, enchanting, and intense form. Poetry has an inimitable power to re-create the human experiences like falling in love, losing love, facing death and disease, losing faith and courage, and finding God. Poems transform the everyday into a creative journey through our imaginations."
